It’s safe to say that Avengers: Infinity War was a massive success breaking a number of records and showing us that the superhero genre is here to stay. That being said after that climatic ending, fans are left with a number of questions from earth’s mightiest heroes latest outing.
A lot of questions have been asked and using my vast knowledge of comics, movies and fan speculation, I Alex Lutkin will try and answer a lot of those questions and share my own speculations. Before we begin though this will be going in to deep spoilers of Infinity War, so if you’ve not seen the movie and are still reading please stop and go watch it then come back. You have been warned.
Doctor Strange’s Master Plan
The one thing that Doctor Strange made absolutely clear to Tony Stark, on the way to Titan, is if it is a choice between saving him and Spider-Man or giving Thanos the time stone he will not hesitate to watch them both die.
As we see later he does sacrifice the stone to save Tony’s life from Thanos’ final blow. Of course Doctor Strange being a hero, he was always going to do the right thing, but maybe it’s more than that? Before the battle Doctor Strange used the time stone to see over fourteen million possibilities for the outcome of the battle in which our heroes only win one.
Doctor Strange is the type of hero to see the bigger picture, he knew they would lose that fight in order to win the war. He knew Thanos would always succeed, but for them to win Tony Stark must survive: he said it himself “Tony, there was no other way”.
Tony Stark is the Key
Safe to say Iron Man has been at the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning all those years ago with Iron Man in 2008. We’ve come a long way since then, but Phase One is where the battle with Thanos’ began.
Tony has known something major was coming since he flew the missile into the portal at the end of Avengers. From then on he suffered with PTSD and had visions of all the Avengers’ deaths in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He knew some sort of force was coming and tried to prepare according.
Even Thanos himself acknowledges his importance. “You’re not the only one cursed with knowledge.” Tony needs to survive from a franchise point of view to allow a reconciliation with Captain America after the events of Captain America: Civil War. When Thanos snaps his fingers and half the universe is wiped out, Tony is one of the survivors as he needs to be. Standing by Nebula waiting to make his next move.
Nebula: More Important than you Think
It is no mistake that all the original Avengers were left alive at the end of the film, but what may surprise fans is why Nebula survived. Readers of the Infinity Gauntlet will know just how important she is in that storyline, as she is the one who steals the gauntlet and uses it to defeat Thanos. Now I’m not saying that will happen in the film, but it still hints that big things are ahead for Nebula, even more so now since Thanos killed her adopted sister, Gamora.
Captain Marvel the Blast from the Past
As the post credit scene shows us Iron Man wasn’t the first superhero Nick Fury met. His last action before he faded into the ether was that he managed page Captain Marvel.
Now we will see Brie Larson’s portrayal of Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel before Avengers 4 and it will be set in the 90s hence the pager. Now it has been confirmed that the Skrulls will be the main antagonists, this makes me think that the Skrulls may play a valuable part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers 4, with Secret Invasion being the next comic event to be adapted.
The Skrulls are shapeshifters who disguise themselves as some of the Avengers, how shocking would it be to find out the heroes we’ve come to respect are not the heroes we thought.
The Missing Avengers
Black Widow let us know that both Ant-Man and Hawkeye got a deal from the government allowing them to be with their families after the events of Civil war. Hence why they were not there for Infinity War. I have a theory that Hawkeye will definitely appear in Avengers 4, because his family will have vanished once Thanos snapped his fingers, and he’ll want to help to sort it out.
Now with the upcoming movie Ant-man and the Wasp, I don’t think we will see both those heroes in Avengers 4. If Paul Rudd, as Scott Lang, is in Avengers 4 it’s because his daughter has vanished. That being said I think it would be more interesting to have Scott Lang be the one who disappeared and the Wasp joins the Avengers as that dynamic has not been explored yet.
It Rests with the Soul Gem
So we finally find out where the soul gem has been hiding this whole time on Vormir, and Gamora knew where it was this whole time. Now in order to get it, Thanos had to kill the one thing he truly loves, this being Gamora.
As it’s revealed later in the film, Gamora may not have died but instead her essence was transported to the soul gem. Now this is very important as it is known in the comics that Adam Warlock who had the soul gem placed in his head, uses it famously in the Infinity Gauntlet comic to disturb the rest of the gems in the Gauntlet.
Could Gamora have that power now she’s part of the stone? Or has half the universe not actually died but was transported into the gem? All we truly know is that the Soul Gem will play a major part moving forward.
The Red Skull Returns
Now the Red Skull no longer has to guard those looking for the soul gem it is clear he may be looking for a new job. Maybe it’s time this villain moves back to Earth, and reunite in battle with his most famous enemy, Captain America.
Now I am under no illusions that Avengers 4 is Chris Evans’ last movie in the MCU, so I think it would be the ideal time to pass the shield on to a successor, and the up and coming threat of a newly established Red Skull would be a great antagonist for the new Captain America.
I know a lot of people believe that Bucky Banes should be the next Captain America, but I think Sam Wilson is the man for the job. Bucky has become a new hero in his own right since the events of Civil War, living in Wakanda and becoming the White Wolf. Sam has shown he can handle himself in battle, and if the comics are anything to go by he did an amazing job as Captain America. Also I think it will show a major statement from Marvel, having a major Nazi villain come up against a protagonist of another race.
Spider-Man’s New Mentor
Spider-Man: Homecoming was a major success for Marvel and people loved to see the father-son relationship of Peter Parker and Tony Stark. I don’t think Tony will survive Avengers 4 and this will have a major effect on Peter in the next Spider-Man film.
However I don’t think he will be alone, and seeing as Stark was his mentor in Homecoming it wouldn’t surprise me to see another Avenger make an appearance in Spider-Man. I think the only logical choice is Doctor Strange being Peter’s new mentor, who he’s already met in the latest Avengers Movie.
Kevin Bacon Will Save Everyone
Joking but seriously I’d pay to watch this.
So there you have it my theories of what’s going to happen moving forward for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I may do a follow up to this if the Fox deal has become official and we get Fantastic Four and X-Men into the fold, but I’m not going to speculate until some announcements have been made official. Please remember to like and share, and if you have any ideas I would love to hear them on our website or Facebook page.
