Film has always been part of my life. It is something I hold as entertainment, inspiration and has shaped my personality.
When I was a kid I used to read review books that were the size of encyclopedias. I had a diary where I wrote reviews and graded them. I loved Classic Cinema. This changed after studying film at Melbourne University. I discovered my love for the horror genre.
So here goes my list of the top 10 films that have influenced by life, and who I am as a person today.

Film has always been a part of my life. From going to the cinema for the first time on my second birthday, to watching films with my dad, it’s something that has always felt special to me. As someone who grew up in a house with a ridiculously sized DVD collection, and a father who collected Empire magazine, movies became hard to avoid.
The films in this list either resonated with me for a very specific reason, or hold some nostalgia that I will never be able to shake. Ultimately, they all hold a very special place both in my heart, and my life.

I want to preface this article by saying that I like about 90 percent of the movies on this list. There’s only about ten out of all of these I don’t like, and that’s just because these really are the best of the best. So if you read this thinking “Wow, how is that movie so low on this list?” The answer is simply because when the average quality is so high, the rest will suffer by comparison. That being said, the Oscars are something that people either hate because they mainly talk about movies which aren’t blockbusters, or people hate them because they don’t choose the right small films/blockbusters to talk about.
Just look at the last three years for a perfect example of this, as on the day nominations came out, people will flood twitter with “SNUBBED” this and “OVERRATED” that. So because school is over, I’m furloughed for another month, and the cabin fever is setting in, I’m going to put all 150 of the nominees I’ve seen in order from worst to best.
I also know that I still have a lot more to watch (There have been 563 nominees over the 92 year history of the Oscars, so I’m barely at the quarter mark) and this list leans heavily on the current history of the Oscars (47 films being from the 2010s), but that’s just because it’s a lot easier to find a movie from today than it is to find Captains Courageous or Twelve O’Clock High. Picking the 10 films the influenced me was by no means an easy task. Sure, it would have been easy to reel off 10 classics and talk about how great they are, but instead, I’ve decided to treat this list as a way to rediscover films that had a profound, emotional impact on me upon first viewing. I’ve seen a great deal of movies in my time however, only a select few have really resonated with me on a greater level than simple enjoyment.
To some, this list may seem a little strange, perhaps even a little obscure, but each of these films has earned its place in my top 10 with rightful cause. Whether they happened to coincide with personal circumstance in my own life, or they covered themes so harrowing they really stuck with me, here are the top 10 cinematic experiences that influenced me as a film fan, a film critic, and even as a person.

When I got the notification about our ten most influential films, I have to say, I immediately panicked. Ten best films, I could go on for hours. Ten worst films, even longer. However, when it comes to the most influential, that’s much harder. Do you focus on the movies that formed you as a human, because if so, I’ve based my entire personality on the Greek Choir from Mighty Aphrodite singing “When You’re Smiling” and that only takes up one spot, or do you focus on the movies you associate with specific memories, like the last time I ever saw a friend before moving away was at a screening of Ghostbusters (2016).
I chose something of a mix, and I’ll admit that some of these were hard to come up with. You don’t realize how few movies that actually matter until you’re forced to compile a list of them. So without any more meandering, let’s talk about the ten most influential movies to me. Continue reading
Today, I become a trailblazer for all. What I’m about to do is a first that the world has never seen. I’m going to talk about video games on the internet. My knowledge of video games and rating those is the exact opposite of my knowledge of movies. The most I know about game critique is the fact I’ve watched Zero Punctuation for the last six years. However, I do still play games like NBA2K, Mortal Kombat, Hitman, and Animal Crossing. I enjoy these games, but I recognize that a lot of people don’t. It’s hard for me to defend my position as I don’t know a whole lot on the subject.
But I do know things about movies, and boy does Hollywood try to merge the two a lot! I, as of writing, have seen roughly two dozen video game movies, which range from 4 ½ stars to less than a half star, and I haven’t even seen the really bad ones (Alone in the Dark, Ratchet and Clank, DOA). Upon my research, looking at critic and audience scores, video games are better now than they ever have been before. So why do they still suck so much? If you’ve been following current affairs recently, you’ll be well aware of the turmoil unfolding before our eyes. The coronavirus pandemic is one that has instilled fear into the minds of people across the globe, with over 1.5million cases and 90,000 deaths worldwide.
For us film fans, now more than ever can we rely on the medium to transport us away from the sadness going on outside, and take us to fantasy worlds with some of our favourite characters. With over half of the world’s population is under lockdown (an unprecedented statistic in the modern day in itself), now is the time to dust off those old VHS tapes, DVDs and blu-rays and watch as many films as possible.
