MM Top 5: Reasons why superhero films won’t survive

Another day, another superhero film. X-Men Apocalypse has prompted many things that come around with a superhero film. Fans showing how little shame they have and dressing up in tight spandex to hang around at conventions to generate sweat, tons of fan-art of Quicksilver making out with Loki, and of course, movie critics insisting that superhero films are about to die any second, no seriously it’s about to happen.

Look, I get it. Variety is the spice of life, and you don’t want to be stuck with all of this nerd stuff. I totally understand. I’d personally hate it if there were a ton of films about fashion and human social interactions and other things I detest. You all want to go back to a time when Midnight Cowboy could be considered the biggest film release of the year so in denial you blindly insist that this whole superhero thing is just a passing phase that’s bound to end soon.

MM Top 5: Comics That Should Be Movies

So Captain America: Civil War finally came out and the consensus seems to be that it’s pretty good. This is sort of odd because Civil War the comic book is mostly remembered for being an eensy wincy tiny itty little bit god-awful. Infamously mopey, overlong and stupid, it is the Batman vs Superman of Marvel comic books.

So we already knew that good comic books can make for successful movies, and now we know that bad comic books can make for successful movies too. So because I suck at intros, here are some more that they should do. Continue reading

So, Batman vs Superman was amazing/great/ok/bad/worse than a wrestling match between X-Pac and Piers Morgan, delete where applicable. As of writing it isn’t out yet, but already people are nervous about the future of Superman. After all, how badly did Man of Steel get received when you need to bring in Batman for help?

So, seeing as there’s been absolutely no major film release this week, let’s talk about that Warcraft trailer that came out recently.

Aficionados of video games might notice something a little odd about this trailer. Mostly, it looks like an actual video game for once. This is, in my opinion, absolutely fantastic, because the main reason video game movies are so terrible is that a lot of video games take their plots from other movies. I already know the planned Uncharted movie is going to be terrible because Uncharted is basically a cheap Indiana Jones, just like how the Hitman films were both terrible Jason Bourne knockoffs. MM Top 5: Video game movies

For the nerds among you, it won’t be a surprise to learn that the video game industry has always had an inferiority complex and has been striving to become like the film industry for years, despite being far more successful. And now, with out-of-control production budgets, a mainstream industry constantly ripping their own customers off and the indie scene becoming dominated by crowd-funding and a lack of quality control, the video game industry has 100% succeeded.

However, now it seems that films want to be like video games. And why not; in comparison to video games, films just suck. There’s no film dealing with the emotional struggle of being an overweight Italian plumber who indulges in magic mushrooms and smashes bricks with his head to get coins, and the world is poorer for it. So cinema is attempting to get its game on, not that anyone appreciates it; Pixels has been very poorly received and early reviews of Hitman: Agent 47 don’t paint a better picture. So the question needs to ask; has Hollywood ever gotten our video games actually right? Continue reading

MM Top 5: Opinion changing movies

So, I ended up seeing Jurassic World for a second time with a friend. It was an interesting experiment for me, because I know that my thoughts of the film have been met with some disagreement, and here I could see if what I saw was not present on a second viewing. And the results are…

… I was completely right. Its stunning visuals are matched only by how bad the writing is. Every scene with the Indominus Rex is sublime but the “love and friendship saves the day” ending is at odds with the otherwise very dark tone of the film. The baffling score gels with the visuals as well as a book gels with a band-saw. Chris Pratt is very good, and Bryce Dallas Howard’s B-plot is misogynistic.

But not every film gets the same reception upon a second, third or even thirty-eighth viewing. So here we have the top five films that audiences and critics remember completely differently to how they saw it the first time around. Continue reading
