MM Top 5: Alien films

14886217_1040838869357950_851251975_nBy Rob Stoakes. So over at the Battleship Potemkast, the finest podcast on the seas, we’ve been doing a few retro reviews of the mainline Alien franchise in celebration of Alien: Covenant, which to be honest is a bit of a rubbish name. It’s the Matrix syndrome of taking a cool sounding word that means nothing and pairing it with alien. Alien Synthesis. Alien Carbohydrate. Alien Titillation.

Anyway, Alien is very similar to Star Wars, in that it is the absolute king of its own genre, space opera for Star Wars and sci-fi horror for Alien, and one of the most popular multimedia franchises this side of Pokemon, and the highs of the franchise are so good that it somehow makes people forget that about 90% of it is absolutely terrible.

So, of course, I am a huge Alien fan, so I get to drop the pretense of professionalism and indulge in my inner child, which normally I lock in the shed, to find out which of the mainline Alien films is actually the best. Strap in, folks; this road is bumpy. Continue reading

MM Top 5: Things Marvel needs to stop

Yes, at long last we get to follow the lovable crew once again as they embark on an adventure of middling quality in the most passable blockbuster of the year! Prepare for the most moderate experience of your life! Woohoo! Go Marvel! The Kings of Hollywood!

So, yeah, as you might have guessed, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 has left me a little cold. While not exactly bad, it does feel tired, the humour seems more forced than before, and what started out as a promisingly quirky and bizarre series has basically turned out to be a Fast and Furious movie with characters constantly rambling about family and how families are and how we’re not friends but a family and I didn’t have a family and I thought we were your family and I have found my family and aaaaaaaaargh!

And Marvel has been grinding my gears for a while now, so this is a good time to give a list of the things Marvel could stop doing if they want to remain the Kings of Tinseltown. Continue reading

MM Top 5: Movie Metropolis articles (birthday special)

Movie Metropolis was born from my love of writing and my passion for the art of film-making. Six years ago today (October 19th) the site was set up by myself in an effort to channel my reviewing tendencies into something a little more concrete.

Over half a decade later, the website has grown at an astonishing rate, attracting thousands of visitors from across the globe and connecting them through their love of cinema.

In 2016, Movie Metropolis launched MM Play, a dedicated YouTube channel aimed at providing fun and engaging multi-platform content, moving away from the usual reviews that have formed the backbone of the the site’s online presence.

There exists no other franchise where almost half the entries are so vehemently detested by those who maintain an unbreakable devotion to the other half.

Star Wars, whether you’re a purist, a passive fan, or you’ve only seen The Force Awakens in cinema and didn’t really get the hype behind that old guy with the beard, is undeniably important to both cinema and popular culture.

Can you believe it’s been five years since Harry Potter left us? The box-office phenomenon that became one of the highest grossing franchises of all time certainly left its mark on generations of fans. With a new film based in the wizarding universe scheduled for release in November, and a stage play taking the theatrical world by storm, Harry Potter is once again a hot topic.

Remember Pokemon? In the mid-90s it had taken the world by storm, creating millions of eager fans in the process. It was a true global phenomenon, but as fads tend to do, Pokemon slipped into the shadows very slightly with only its die-hard followers remaining part of the cult.

Fast forward to 2016, Pokemon’s 20th year, and the unthinkable has happened. Pokemon GO, the map-based catching game has reignited the public’s interest in the cute little monsters and with a live-action film on the way, it seems fitting that Adam Brannon would look through the best movies related to the brand. Can you believe it’s been one year since the release of Jurassic World? The long awaited third sequel to Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster smashed box-office records across the globe, becoming the third highest-grossing film of all time in less than a month.
