“The best dinosaur film since 1993” is how The End of Oak Street is being touted by some in the film-critic community. And while I think that’s coming off a bit strong (though it does make for a great headline), there’s no denying that this bite-sized dino thriller packs more bite for its buck than the last two entries in the Jurassic saga.

It’s been a tough couple of years for the MCU, hasn’t it? Eeek.
After Infinity War and Endgame brought the Infinity Saga to a close, the world’s most successful cinematic universe has lurched forward like a spluttering steam train trying to find its track again.
From a film perspective, it’s been an incredibly mixed bag. Phase Five gave us three of the worst Marvel movies ever made – Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels and Captain America: Brave New World. While Phase Six got off to a better start with Fantastic Four: First Steps, it still underperformed at the box office.
The MCU film machine then took a year-long breather, meaning Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives carrying an enormous weight of expectation. Marvel is counting on it to reignite the public’s love affair with superheroes. But can it succeed?
Continue readingSome films are so entrenched in our culture that they remain talking points long after their initial release. Think Schindler’s List, The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, The Dark Knight – the list goes on.
Christopher Nolan is no stranger to creating films like that. His filmography makes incredible reading and, to allow this reviewer to be bold for one moment, he’s probably the most talented and consistent director working today.
His latest epic, The Odyssey, is potentially his most hyped film to date. Based on the book of the same name by Homer (no, not that one…), it’s been marketed incredibly well. So, the hype is certainly real, but is the finished product one of Nolan’s best, or one to skip?
Continue readingIt’s October 2006, and a little-known film called The Devil Wears Prada stuns audiences to become the ultimate sleeper hit, grossing more than 10 times its budget. In doing so, it propels rising stars like Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt into the spotlight – a place they’ve comfortably occupied ever since.
Meanwhile, Meryl Streep cements her acting prowess with Miranda Priestly, a character that has remained firmly embedded in pop culture. The film also gifted us quote after quote and meme after meme – moments that have since found a second life in the age of TikTok.
Continue readingIt’s easy to lose yourself in the rhythm of great music. That pull – so central to rave culture (alongside a few less legal influences) – offers an escape from everyday life, a chance to dissolve into the dance and the crowd around you. But what happens when that urge to get lost leads somewhere far darker, a desolate, unforgiving landscape at the edge of despair? It’s this journey, this “path,” that forms the spiritual core of Sirat.
Continue readingFor a film franchise to have been running for 30 years without ever producing a “bad” entry is nothing short of extraordinary. Six films in, Scream has cemented itself as one of the great slasher franchises, boasting fantastic casting, well-placed humour, and brilliant commentary on both the state of horror and the world at the time of each release.
Continue readingTo say I was pleasantly surprised at this brand-new Netflix action film would be an understatement. I admit that perhaps my own film snobbery prevented me from going into it without preconceptions of typical action straight-to-streaming films.
If it wasn’t for a superb cast, including legends of Hollywood Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, I may have given this one a miss- thank goodness I didn’t because what followed was a thrilling mystery that kept me locked in throughout its run time.
Continue readingTrain Dreams, based on the Novella by Denis Johnson, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2025. Recently making its way to Netflix, I watched it to try to understand what all of the hype was about for this stunning picture.
The plot is simple, centering on the life of a hard-working Robert Granier- played by Joel Edgerton. Through the decades, we see Robert go through the highs and lows of a constantly changing United States during the 20th century. It is not the world that the film draws attention to though, but Robert’s personal struggles to find his way and meaning in life.
Continue readingBased on the 2022 novel of the same name by Freida McFadden, The Housemaid is a stylish psychological thriller packed with twists, turns, and some standout performances from a very talented cast. But does this campy thriller manage to hold the audience’s attention, or does it ultimately outstay its welcome?
Hoping for a fresh start after a troubled past, Millie (Sydney Sweeney) becomes a live-in maid for the wealthy Winchesters, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, a couple who harbour more than a few sinister secrets.
