“Paul Rudd like you’ve never seen him” Ant-Man review

ANT-MAN   (UK CERT: 12A)

Music: Christophe Beck

Starring: Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly

Ant-Man has had numerous production problems

Ant-Man has had numerous production problems

REVIEW AUTHOR: Adam Brannon

You can almost hear the groans, yet another superhero film bulldozes its way into cinemas. Sandwiched between the ambitious Avengers: Age of Ultron and the Fantastic Four reboot, Marvel’s Ant-Man is the first of this year’s summer superheroes.

However, numerous setbacks that included a director walking out halfway through filming meant that Ant-Man would be haunted by the action behind-the-scenes, rather than that on it. But what is the finished product like? Continue reading

“This is how slasher parodies are done” Dude Bro Party Massacre III review

DUDE BRO PARTY MASSACRE III   (UK CERT: N/A)

Director: Tomm Jacobsen, Michael Rousselet, Jon Salmon

Music: Tyler Burton

Starring: Alec Owen, Patton Oswalt, Brian Firenzi

parental_advisory_explicit_content_lge_logoFreddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare is the best Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Possibly the only good one.

Yes, horror movie junkies, I can smell your rage. I can feel every hair on your body stand up on edge. I can taste your hatred and it tastes good.

Note that I did not say the films aren’t entertaining, but if we’re being honest, Freddy Krueger has never ever been scary. He talks to the audience, he cracks jokes… he’s just silly. Besides, even if he was frightening, you don’t watch those films for the horror; you watch them for the ridiculous kills, the jokes and for the gallons and gallons of blood and guts. Freddy’s Dead threw everything out that got in the way of that, and that’s why it is the best Freddy film. A true reboot of the franchise shouldn’t even attempt horror in my opinion; just pile on the guts and the giggles and you’d have a film much tighter and better than anything in the series proper. “The bear is back!” Ted 2 review

TED 2   (UK CERT: 15)

Director: Seth McFarlane

Music: Walter Murphy

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfriend, Morgan Freeman

REVIEW AUTHOR: Adam Brannon

Ted 2 is again directed by Seth McFarlane

Ted 2 is again directed by Seth McFarlane

The success of Ted was completely unexpected. I doubt even director Seth McFarlane knew just how popular it would go on to become.

From special DVD’s to limited edition cuddly (or not so cuddly) toys, Ted has become something of a phenomenon. A sequel was always going to be on the cards and after three years perfecting it, McFarlane returns with Ted 2. But is it as funny as its predecessor? Continue reading

“Not a complete disaster” Terminator Genisys review

TERMINATOR GENISYS   (UK CERT: 12A)

Director: Alan Taylor

Music: Lorne Balfe

Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke

REVIEW AUTHOR: Adam Brannon

Genisys ends a six year hiatus for the series

Genisys ends a six year hiatus for the series

Sequels and reboots are making up the bulk of 2015’s cinematic offerings. With films added to franchises like Jurassic Park, Star Wars and James Bond, it was always going to be tough for others to make much of a dent.

It’s been six years since Christian Bale took over lead billing from Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator series in the critically panned Terminator Salvation. But director Alan Taylor (Thor: the Dark World), a newcomer to the sci-fi adventure series, resurrects the franchise with Terminator Genisys. But is it worth a watch? Continue reading

“Bright, smart and hilarious” Minions review

MINIONS   (UK CERT: U)

Director: Pierre Coffin, Kyle Balda

Music: Heitor Pereira

Voices: Sandra Bullock, Geoffrey Rush

REVIEW AUTHOR: Adam Brannon

They’re everywhere! Minions have become a worldwide phenomenon since their unveiling in 2010’s smash-hit Despicable Me and for their return in its sequel.

It was only a matter of time before Universal gave their most successful animated franchise a prequel, and allowing it to focus on the cute yellow creatures was a masterstroke by the people behind the scenes. No matter where you go there is something minion related to buy.

But the question is, does a film based on them truly work? After all, it’s their evil master Gru who is the main focus of the previous features. Continue reading

“Sir Ian McKellen is magnificent” Mr Holmes review

MR HOLMES   (UK CERT: PG)

Director: Bill Condon

Music: Carter Burwell

Starring: Ian McKellen, Laura Linney, Frances De La Tour

REVIEW AUTHOR: Adam Brannon
Sherlock Holmes is hot property at the moment. Robert Downey Jr has played the titular detective in two box-office behemoths and Benedict Cumberbatch is supremely popular across the globe for his take on the character.
Now, Sir Ian McKellen is giving it a go in the little-publicised BBC funded Mr Holmes. But does it continue the trend of crafting intriguing dramas from the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Continue reading

“A trip down memory lane” Jurassic World review

JURASSIC WORLD   (UK CERT: 12A)

Director: Colin Trevorrow

Music: Michael Giacchino

Starring: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Omar Sy

REVIEW AUTHOR: Adam Brannon

Can you believe it’s been 14 years since genetically modified dinosaurs rampaged across our screens in Joe Johnston’s underwhelming Jurassic Park III?

After being stuck in development hell for over a decade, Steven Spielberg handpicked indie director Colin Trevorrow to helm the fourth instalment of the popular adventure franchise, Jurassic World, but can it return the much-loved series to form? Continue reading

“Comedic gold” Spy review

SPY   (UK CERT: 15)

Director: Paul Feig

Music: Theodore Shapiro

Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Miranda Hart

REVIEW AUTHOR: Adam Brannon

From the brilliant Paul Feig, director of the ridiculously funny Bridesmaids and Sandra Bullock’s laugh-a-minute The Heat comes the latest in the secret agent comedy film, Spy. But does this film, fronted by the ever-popular Melissa McCarthy have what it takes to play with the big boys in the genre? Continue reading

“As solid as The Rock” San Andreas review

SAN ANDREAS   (UK CERT: 12A)

Director: Brad Peyton

Music: Andrew Lockington

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Kylie Minogue

REVIEW AUTHOR: Adam Brannon

Who doesn’t love a good disaster movie? From Dante’s Peak to The Day After Tomorrow, there’s enough city-levelling action in the movie archives to terrify even the most urban of us.

The genre came to a head somewhat in 2009 with the overly cheesy 2012. Directed by Roland Emmerich, aka the disaster movie king, it was a huge box-office success but audiences were turned off by the idea of destroying the entire globe.

After a few years off, the genre returns with San Andreas. But can this earthquake-based blockbuster evoke memories of yesteryear’s disaster flicks? Continue reading

“More 80s cheese than a Miami dairy” Kung Fury review

KUNG FURY   (UK CERT: UNRATED)

Director: David Sandberg

Music: Mitch Murder, Lost Years

Starring: David Sandberg, Jorma Taccone

REVIEW AUTHOR: Rob Stoakes

If you’re an 80’s style film, then 2015 has been your year. We’ve had John Wick, Mad Max: Fury Road… even Inherent Vice, a film set in 1970, looked like every character was about to break out VHS’s and talk about Duran Duran. Given that, it’s surprisingly rare how few comedies there are in that mix. Zombeavers has a few chuckles at the ridiculous nature of it and there’s the upcoming Dude Bro Party Massacre 3, but overall the comedy drought is surprising.

Kung Fury, a little 30-minute crowd funded mini-movie, hopes to fill that void. Despite being shorter than a TV pilot and being created by rookies to the craft, it’s been making huge waves on the internet, with a hugely popular trailer and David Hasselhoff releasing a single to tie into the film, and now that the wait is over it has been released in its entirety to Youtube for free. But the question is, does it actually hold up? Continue reading
