At Movie Metropolis, we pride ourselves on fair, accurate and spoiler-free reviews by people who love going to the cinema. After all, what’s the point in reading a review created by somebody who doesn’t love the art of film-making.
Our review system has gone through a few changes over the years and we have tried a few things that haven’t quite worked how they were originally planned to do, but the fundamental purpose of film reviewing remained the same: they are all written to inform you of a movie’s quality.
Below is everything you need to know about the film review ratings system currently used on Movie Metropolis by all writers, whether that be Adam, Jesse, Alex or Emily. Should you have any questions about our ratings or if you have any thoughts on upgrading the system, just let us know in the comments box below.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ – Five star films are reserved for a movie that we feel could be a new classic. Each cog in the film has to work in harmony with everything else for a movie-going experience that is sure to get the emotions flowing.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ – Whilst not necessarily a future classic, four star films are absolutely great. With great casts, scores and cinematography, the four star rating is given to those films that are definitely memorable, if not completely original.
⭐ ⭐ ⭐ – A three star film is still a commendable one. But, for one reason or another, they haven’t quite got what it takes to feature in the higher rankings. That’s not to say they aren’t enjoyable, but they’re probably more of a one-watch rather than repeat viewing.
⭐ ⭐ – A two star film shows some promise but isn’t recommendable for a variety of reasons. This could be poor acting, sloppy special effects or dull and lifeless cinematography. While they clearly had good intentions, it wasn’t meant to be this time around.
⭐ – Oh dear. The one star rating is one we hope to give out very sparsely over our film-reviewing careers. Reserved for the very worst films out there in the cinema at the moment, they should be avoided at all costs. Save your hard-earned cash and give them a wide berth.
