Incredibles 2 review “Was it worth the wait?”

Incredibles 2 movie posterIt’s been fourteen years since Pixar introduced the likes of Violet, Dash, Robert and Helen Parr onto unsuspecting audiences across the globe. The quartet of superheroes swiftly became one of the studio’s best and most profitable films, with a loyal legion of fans begging for a sequel soon after.

Nevertheless, Pixar went on to create some of the greatest animated films of all time. Then the slump came. After Cars and its dreadful sequel came and went and The Good Dinosaur reminded us that not even Pixar was immune from the movie critic curse, they swiftly regrouped and brought us the thrilling Coco and new classic, Inside Out. Now, 14 years later, Mr Incredible and the team are back. But are we looking at a classic Pixar, or a sequel that is too little too late? Continue reading

Deadpool 2 review “More of the same”

Deadpool 2 posterWho would have thought we would get to this? I certainly didn’t. After the right royal mess 20th Century Fox made of everyone’s favourite anti-hero, Deadpool, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine all those years ago, it felt like a solo outing would never be possible, never mind a sequel.

Deadpool senior went on to gross nearly $800million worldwide, impressive for an R-rated (15 certification) flick, and was an undisputed king of comic-book hero movies. Like Guardians of the Galaxy was for Marvel Studios, Deadpool was a huge gamble that paid off massively thanks to Ryan Reynold’s brilliant comic-timing and an origins story that wasn’t done to death. Naturally, a sequel was always on the cards. But are we looking at a sequel of Empire quality or Speed 2: Cruise Control? Continue reading

Justice League review “Hoorah, it’s not a total dud”

Justice League posterThe entire production of Justice League has been enveloped in the tragedy surrounding director Zack Snyder’s sudden departure from the project in March this year.

After losing his daughter, Autumn, to suicide, the DC regular decided to hand over the reins of his passion project to Avengers director Joss Whedon so that he could spend time with his family. Whedon came on board and decided to undertake costly reshoots in order to get the film finished on time.

In that respect, it’s a miracle we’ve even got a Justice League movie in the first place. What’s even more of a miracle is that it turns out to be not rubbish – unfortunately that’s probably the biggest compliment I can give this frequently entertaining but messy outing for our favourite selection of DC Comic superheroes. “DC gets it right*” Wonder Woman review

14859347_1040969846011519_1192281544_o-copyBy Adam Brannon. * almost. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that Wonder Woman is alright because it’s been directed by a woman, or that it’s the most progressive superhero film of the last decade. No, neither of those things are true.

However, the titular superhero, played superbly by Gal Gadot stars in by far the best film in the ever-expanding DC Universe – though with Suicide Squad and Batman v Superman as stablemates, that really isn’t saying much. Continue reading

MM Top 5: Things Marvel needs to stop

14886217_1040838869357950_851251975_nBy Rob Stoakes. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is finally out, and audiences all around the world have been bowled over by its borderline adequecy! Yes, at long last we get to follow the lovable crew once again as they embark on an adventure of middling quality in the most passable blockbuster of the year! Prepare for the most moderate experience of your life! Woohoo! Go Marvel! The Kings of Hollywood!

So, yeah, as you might have guessed, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 has left me a little cold. While not exactly bad, it does feel tired, the humour seems more forced than before, and what started out as a promisingly quirky and bizarre series has basically turned out to be a Fast and Furious movie with characters constantly rambling about family and how families are and how we’re not friends but a family and I didn’t have a family and I thought we were your family and I have found my family and aaaaaaaaargh!

And Marvel has been grinding my gears for a while now, so this is a good time to give a list of the things Marvel could stop doing if they want to remain the Kings of Tinseltown. Continue reading
