I remember when Pixar was acquired by Disney in 2006, and fans of the animation studio’s work up until that point were absolutely appalled. Concerned, and rightly so, that the House of Mouse would destroy that “small-time studio” feel that Pixar had, it was deemed as a billion dollar catastrophe.
Despite all those reservations, it’s now clear, 14 years on, that Disney’s acquisition of the studio was a positive move for both. Pixar had the ability to create films on a much larger (aka more expensive) scale, and Disney had another studio name to add to its profitability as they began their global domination-style plan. mwahahahaha!
That’s the history lesson over with. Now, as we approach the end of 2020, and with the world completely turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic, Pixar’s latest film, Soul, released directly to Disney+ is just the film we needed to turn our frowns upside down. But how good is it?
Oh wow, there’s so many possibilities when it comes to opening this review. I could somewhat reformat a joke from “Zero Punctuation” about how Disney has been killing off their franchises with the efficiency that would worry the Gestapo. I could talk about how this is one of the launch titles of Disney+, which just came out in the states and how it doesn’t even graze the left buttock of the other titles Disney+ has at launch like “The Mandalorian”or the new Pixar short films like “Smash and Grab” which are amazing.
Or I could always just fall back to “Ol Reliable” and say that no one wanted a live action remake of Lady and the Tramp. I briefly touched on this in my Disney animated film review (which I now see I should have waited another few months for since everything is on Disney+), but I really enjoy the first Lady and the Tramp. It had charm and was a fun movie to watch. With this, we have one of the hardest movies I’ve had to watch for this entire year. 2013’s Frozen was and remains a cultural phenomenon for kids around the globe. Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and reindeer Sven made their way into popular culture and have never retreated, becoming some of Disney’s most beloved fictional characters.
Kaching! With that and nearly $1.3billion in box-office takings behind it, plus all the profits from toys, books and games, Frozen was a gargantuan hit on another level to anything else we had seen in the genre and it remained the highest-grossing animated film of all time until The Lion Kingcame along earlier this year and spoiled the fun.
A sequel then was never a surprise. What was a surprise however is just how long it took Disney to get Frozen II to cinemas. It’s been six whole years since we’ve seen Elsa and the crew in a full-length film and for kids who grew up with its predecessor, this new addition needed to be more mature to keep the attention of new and existing fans. Another month, another Disney remake. After audiences and critics alike were underwhelmed by Tim Burton’s bizarre take on Dumbo, tensions were high with the releases of Aladdinand The Lion King. Thankfully, the former was a colourful, spirited adventure that updated the 1992 classic for the modern-age.
It also has grossed nearly $1billion to-date, but that’s by-the-by – what am I saying, of course it’s not. Money speaks volumes. Nevertheless, The Lion King is perhaps the biggest risk Disney has ever made. It’s arguably the most-loved animation in the studio’s back-catalogue. Think of Aladdin and Dumbo as a litmus test and you wouldn’t be far wrong.
Thankfully, Disney were well aware of this and assembled a strike force of film-makers and actors to ensure this adaptation is as good as it possibly can be. Bringing in The Jungle Bookdirector Jon Favreau was a good idea and his reimagining of that classic performed very well with both critics and audiences. But has he buckled under the pressure?
